While many people think that hearing loss challenges come with getting older, hearing loss can affect the younger generations just as much—even our children can struggle with their hearing.

With personal device headphones at max volume, loud televisions, boisterous birthday parties, and even busy school playgrounds, noise-induced hearing loss has become incredibly common in children.

How many times have you asked your child a question, only for them to not hear you or ask you to repeat yourself? Perhaps you call upstairs for them to come down for dinner and there’s no response unless you shout loud enough?

Noise-induced hearing loss is all too common amongst children—but thankfully, it’s also incredibly easy to treat.

Why Is Our Children's Hearing at Risk?

When we think of noise-induced hearing loss, what do you imagine? Perhaps that quintessential movie scene where there’s a loud explosion, and then the sound goes all muffled, with ringing in the ears. (That’s meant to mimic tinnitus, just one way it can sound for those individuals with it.)

The reality is that noise-induced hearing loss often occurs slowly over extended periods of time; it can be due to the cumulative effects of excessive noise exposure, or listening to loud noises over a longer period.

How long does your child spend on their phone each day, or playing games with their friends?

We measure sound in decibels (dB), and any sound over 85 dB can damage the ear’s hearing-related cells. For comparison, the Apple Airpods Max, one of the best-selling earphone models on the market, can reach a maximum volume of up to 100 dB.

Volume plus duration equals damage. The longer your child listens to loud music or video games, or stands at a concert with no hearing protection, the more damage they could cause to their hearing.

Of course, they don’t realize that their hearing is at risk. Neither did you, until you read this far! But that’s why we’re here: to raise awareness about hearing loss in children and help you get a handle on your child’s hearing before it starts to impact their school life, their social activities, and their home life.
