Why Are My Hearing Aids Whistling?

03/21/2025 | Hearing Aids

Accidents happen – maybe your hearing aids fell off the countertop and onto the floor, or you forgot to take them out before jumping in the pool or the shower. Perhaps they are making an odd noise when you wear them or refuse to connect to your smartphone.

Your hearing aids are more than just your ticket back to strong hearing outcomes: they are an investment in your holistic health, from boosting your cognitive function to helping you stay steady on your feet.

Before you panic or throw your hearing aids away, there are several quick fixes you can try before bringing them to us for a professional hearing aid repair and performance revamp.

1. A Factory Reset

The old reliable fix of turning your hearing aids off and then on again can often fix connectivity issues or issues with no sound coming through. Simply take off your hearing aids, put them in their charging case or power them off.

After letting them sit turned off for a minute or two, try turning them back on.

Sometimes simply turning your Bluetooth off and then back on can help re-establish the connection. Having your smartphone forget your hearing aids and re-pairing them can also work in a pinch!

2. A Quick Clean

Earwax and moisture can get into the casing of hearing aids, leading to muffled sound or feedback issues. Irritants on the casing can also make your ears feel itchy or hurt.

Keeping your hearing aids clean will ensure that they stay performing at their best for your needs. Give them a gentle wipe-down with a microfiber cloth to remove excess moisture and earwax and see the difference in your devices’ performance.

Try brushing off the receiver and microphone ports to remove debris.

3. A Tailored Swap

Many styles of hearing aids come with ear domes that go into your ears to help you hear the amplified sound from the microphones, similar to the way earbuds look. But these one-size-fits-all domes might not fit your unique ears and lead to feedback or whistling with leaking sound, or a too-tight fit that can cause earache.

By swapping the ear domes for a smaller or larger pair or exploring the possibility of custom earmolds for your hearing aids, you will achieve a more secure fit without feedback or whistling to distract you from hearing the life you love.
